Sadhana

After my last re-reading of “High Fidelity’ I began making lists for my favorite songs. But then Hindi film songs can have every possible listing from picturization to lyrics.
So here goes, beginning with Sadhana one of my favorite actors.
Sadhana debuted in Hindi movies with Love in Shimla¬†opposite Joy Mukherjee, directed by R. K. Nayyar (whom she eventually married) and went on to perform in hits like Woh Kaun Thi, Mera Saaya, Waqt¬†etc. She was of course better known for her hairstyle, the fringe, which was called “Sadhana Cut”.

FiveSongs – Solos picturized on Sadhana

#1 Song: Mere Man Ke Diye
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Year: 1960
Movie: Parakh
Director: Bimal Roy
Lyricist: Shailendra
Composer: Salil Chowdhury
Parakh has the ever popular ‘O Sajana Barkha Bahar Aayi’, probably the best known song from the movie. The other solo picturized on Sadhana ‘Mila Hai Kisi Ka Jhumka’ is also one of my favorites, but ‘Mere Man Ke Diye’ stands out because of its simplicity both in picturization and the composition. Sadhana as usual looks beautiful in the minimal light.

#2 Song: Lag Jaa Gale
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Year: 1964
Movie: Woh Kaun Thi
Director: Raj Khosla
Lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan
Composer: Madan Mohan
This movie too has a few solos picturized on Sadhana… the haunting ‘Naina Barse’ and ‘Jo Humne Dastaan Apni’. ‘Lag Jaa Gale’ has Sadhana being all mysterious and Manoj Kumar confused!

#3 Song: Jahan Mein Aisa Kaun Hai
Singer: Asha Bhonsale
Year: 1961
Movie: Hum Dono
Director: Amarjeet
Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi
Composer: Jaidev
‘Abhi Na Jaao Chodkar’ though a duet was predominantly about Dev Anand & Rafi, whereas ‘Jahan Mein Aisa’ is all about Sadhana & Asha Bhonsale. The song is sung almost as a whisper, emphasizing Asha’s versatility.

#4 Song: Mila Hai Kisi Ka Jhumka
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Year: 1960
Movie: Parakh
Director: Bimal Roy
Lyricist: Shailendra
Composer: Salil Chowdhury
The other song from Parakh that I like, is perfect ear-worm material. Shot in rustic surroundings, the music & picturization complement each other perfectly.

#5 Song: Tera Mera Pyar Amar
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Year: 1962
Movie: Asli Naqli
Director: Hrishikesh Mukherjee
Lyricist: Hasrat Jaipuri
Composer: Shanker Jaikishan
This one is a very popular Sadhana song. An evergreen classic picturized on Sadhana & Dev Anand
